TRAFFIC ENGINEERING INTERN

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:   As part of the City of Dubuque Engineering Department, the traffic engineering intern will assist with traffic operations activities throughout the city along with the coordination of capital improvement projects under the control of the Project Engineer. This position involves working on all aspects of project construction which includes construction observation, testing and record keeping for traffic signals, street lighting and miscellaneous ITS communication projects throughout the city. A portion of the work also requires regular communication between the various contractors assigned to various projects. This position will also be involved with the operations and maintenance of the Traffic Operations Center (TOC) located on the third floor of City Hall.

EXAMPLES OF WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

ESSENTIAL: Tasks include on site construction observation, measuring and recording project quantities for payment, configuring traffic signal equipment, observation of traffic signal operation, configuring and updating of ITS software and firmware and responding to citizens questions and service requests in a courteous, timely and equitable manner.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

ESSENTIAL:        Full-time during the summer. Normal hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Overtime if necessary for projects, work hours could be 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Preferred educational background would include areas such as civil engineering, traffic engineering, construction management, computer or software engineering and related courses. The ideal candidate will be able to function comfortably in a professional work environment, possess solid technical skills, be self-motivated, able to work independently with minimal supervision and possess experience working with a diverse workforce. Technical skills necessary for the position include, plan reading, MS Word, MS Excel, and general electrical knowledge. Knowledge of fiber optics and computer networking would be beneficial but not required. The successful candidates will be knowledgeable of diversity, equity and inclusion and will have completed at least their sophomore year in their field of study. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated ability to follow a management style that is input oriented and values equity, problem solving and the development of partnerships and a desire to be part of an organization that values service, people, integrity, responsibility, innovation and teamwork.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: The internship is scheduled to begin mid-May and end in mid-August. Compensation will be $13.60 - $15.79 per hour depending on experience and capabilities. Candidates may have the opportunity to work part-time during school, full-time during winter break, and to return for subsequent summers. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and automobile insurance coverage consistent with the City’s requirements.
