In 1928, United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States began its work as the Dubuque Community Chest. Citizens and civic organizations joined together under the principle that “Individualism is a traditional characteristic of the American people, but so is the spirit of teamwork pulling together for good causes.”
At the time the Dubuque Community Chest was organized, there were only 350 Community Chests in the United States. Today, there are more than 1,800 United Ways worldwide, and United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States has gone from raising $65,000 annually to raising more than $1.8 million annually.
Today, United Way of Dubuque Area Tri-States is still committed to the ideals of diversity and inclusion. We support health and human service programs that address identified community needs and encourage collaboration. The Community Building & Impact and Volunteer Engagement Intern is responsible for helping the Director in activities related to community impact development, strategy development in community investment, allocation evaluation and accountability. They will also be responsible for increasing relationship management and volunteer management practices in support of cross-functional volunteer engagement strategy, coordinating the communication and activities in the engagement process and organizing projects with community partners.
This is opportunity is 5-20 hours a week, designed to be flexible with your schedule.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: The Community Impact & Building Intern will assist the Director by:
Developing Community Impact strategies;
Creating collaborations that will move United Way work forward;
Researching and reporting on other collective impact models;
Developing and promoting three pilot programs for shared indicators;
Management of the Solutions Teams;
Developing impact stats and any other items needed for annual campaign;
Managing and monitoring United Way’s Funded Partner Grant Process;
Monitoring allocation and evaluation time lines of funding initiatives;
Developing and conducting presentations and effective messaging for Community Impact;
Attending activities for Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD);
Managing and monitoring the FEMA grant process and timeline;
Participate in agency and outer agency meetings as assigned;
Assist with the development and execution of events for volunteers and corporate/community partners;
Create and implement promotional strategies for events and on-going volunteer activities;
Initiate and maintain positive relationships with nonprofit organizations to develop and evaluate volunteer projects;
Actively recruit volunteers from various stakeholders, including youth groups, students, corporate groups, faith-based groups, individuals and families;
Initiate and maintain ongoing communication with volunteers to better determine placement and volunteer satisfaction;
Match volunteer projects with volunteer groups based on appropriate criteria;
Visit volunteer sites during events to ensure work is going smoothly and take pictures;
Coordinate surveys, evaluations and other outcome measurements for volunteer activities;
Assists with enhancing digital volunteer experience, including Get Connected software, website, volunteer e-newsletters, and social media tools;
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Social or human services background or working on a social or human services degree;
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and web-based applications.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to work independently;
Strong verbal and written communication skills along with oral presentation skills;
Ability to manage relationships with constituents on a one on one basis as well as in group settings;
Flexibility and ability to manage issues and crisis calmly and effectively;

Ability to organize, prioritize, balance competing demands and meet deadlines;
Ability to manage many projects at one time, prioritizing, and planning for high efficiency;

Ability to represent United Way in a professional manner at all times.
