Peer Support Specialist

Job Purpose: To facilitate client interaction with Wellness Center and WRAP programs.

Regulatory Requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Graduate Iowa Peer Support Training Academy or equivalent.
  • Ability to work with individuals with a lived experience of mental health or substance abuse disorders.
  • Possesses an orientation towards wellness and recovery.
  • Mandatory Reporter for Child/Dependent Adult Abuse. Must be trained within four months of hire date and every five years thereafter.
  • Must successfully complete child/dependent adult abuse and criminal background check, including DHS evaluation (if needed, including documentation of follow-through for any stated employment restrictions); reference check forms (minimum of two); and employment physical, TB test and drug screen prior to contact with clients and as required thereafter.

Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:

  1. Orients persons in recovery to the center and programs.
  2. Develops meaningful relationships with persons in recovery.
  3. Provides peer support to persons in recovery and family members. (See Appendix A for task list).
  4. Role models good self care, coping skills, self-help strategies, and the regular use of wellness tools.
  5. Demonstrates a knowledge of and commitment to Recovery Philosophy.
  6. Demonstrates a commitment to continued education on Wellness, Recovery, and Peer Support.
  7. Participates in required Peer Support Team Meetings, Staff Meetings, workshops, and training as determined by supervisor.
  8. Participates regularly in at least one wellness activity and support group.
  9. Demonstrates a commitment to Recovery-related Advocacy.
  10. Completes all required paperwork according to project standards in a timely manner.
  11. Maintains regular contact with supervisor and actively seeks input from supervisor, Peer Support Team members and persons in recovery.
  12. Adheres to the Peer Support Specialist Code of Ethics (See Appendix B).
  13. Demonstrates respect, non-judgement and compassion toward others.
  14. Communicates appropriately and clearly to supervisor and other staff members.
  15. Acts appropriately in stressful/emergency situations.
  16. Answers the telephone in a professional manner, directs calls appropriately, takes messages.
  17. Reports to supervisor any repairs needed or supplies to be ordered.
  18. Operates equipment safely and correctly.
  19. Demonstrates the ability to be organized and flexible and assumes other duties as assigned.
